The CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma in Professional Marketing is an advanced digital marketing qualification, offered by the Chartered Institute of Marketing. Students are required to complete written assessments to pass three modules on different areas of marketing strategy, in order to obtain the Digital Diploma.

Strategic marketing skills are a key focus of the Digital Diploma. For many students, building proficiency in this area facilitates progression to senior job roles such as Marketing Manager, Head of Marketing and Marketing Consultant. The Digital Diploma is widely regarded as an industry-leading qualification for experienced marketers.

How to get the CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma in Professional Marketing

Students can choose from a few different ways to study for the Digital Diploma:

  • Face-to-face tuition at a CIM study centre;
  • online learning; or
  • a mixture of the two.

Taking the Digital Diploma online with Target Internet: how does it work?

All the learning, tuition, and revision required for the CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma in Professional Marketing can be completed online via Target Internet e-learning. Once you are satisfied that you have mastered the required course content, you can submit your written assessments for each of the Diploma’s three modules to the CIM for grading.

Studying towards the Digital Diploma with Target Internet works like this:

  • You pay a monthly membership fee for Target Internet’s e-learning;
  • This grants you password-protected online access to the course content for the Digital Diploma;
  • The content includes videos, written resources and revision tasks, all of which are approved by CIM’s course compilers;

To achieve the Digital Diploma, students must gain a pass in three mandatory modules:

  • Driving digital experience
  • Mastering digital channels
  • Digital strategy

Each module requires about 130 hours of study time, which brings the total study time for the Digital Diploma up to about 390 hours. All the learning materials you’ll need are available through Target Internet’s e-learning.

Once you’ve finished learning and revising the course content for one of your three modules, you’ll be ready to be assessed. The assessment takes the form of a written assignment covering several questions, which is graded by the CIM. They’ll get back to you with your grade, and if you pass, your certification. Grade boundaries for the assessments are as follows:

Distinction (D): 70-100

Merit (M): 60-69

Pass (P): 50-59

Fail (F): 0-49

You can do a written assessment for any of the three modules whenever suits you best.

Students who fail a module can re-take their assessment unlimited times. Of course, since this requires further investment of time and fees, our tutors will do their utmost to ensure you have a great chance of passing at the first attempt.

Each module is a standalone Award, as well as a component of the Digital Diploma qualification. Some students may wish to take just one module that focuses on an area they have identified as an important area for their professional development.

How hard is the Digital Diploma?

The CIM describes the Level 6 Digital Diploma as suitable “for marketing managers and marketers working in operational and supervisory roles, who are looking to progress their strategic and management skills.” The difficulty level of the Diploma is equivalent to that of an undergraduate degree.

Of all the courses offered by the CIM, the Level 6 Digital Diploma is the second-hardest. The only qualification more advanced is the CIM Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme, a Master’s level qualification which is not available for online-only study.

What are the entry requirements for the Digital Diploma?

The CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma in Professional Marketing is designed to help experienced marketers take their existing knowledge and skills to the next level, and this is reflected in the entry requirements for the Diploma.

To gain entry to the Diploma, applicants must have one of the following:

  • Professional Certificate in Marketing / Certificate in Professional Marketing (CIM Level 4);
  • Level 4 qualification from another relevant provider;
  • Foundation degree in Business with Marketing;
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a recognised university, with at least one-third of credits coming from marketing content (i.e. 120 credits in Bachelor’s degrees or 60 credits in Master’s degrees);
  • Professional practice (the CIM suggests two years marketing in an operational role). If this option is chosen, a diagnostic assessment is required in order to secure enrollment.

Applicants who do not speak English as their first language must also be able to demonstrate they have achieved one of the following qualifications within the last two years:

  • IELTS Academic Module with an overall score of 6.5 (each component pass mark must be 6.0 or above).
  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English grade B or above.
  • CIM will consider some equivalent alternatives.

Candidates who have studied towards their Digital Diploma with Target Internet must have an active Target Internet membership at the time they take their CIM assessments.

How much does it cost to take the CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma (and how do the costs break down)?

One of the key benefits of taking the CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma online with Target Internet is that the expense to students tends to be relatively low, compared with studying at bricks-and-mortar CIM study centres. Here’s a breakdown of the costs:

Target Internet elearning subscription: From £20 per month (the rate varies depending on the duration of subscription you pay for)

CIM Affiliate Studying Membership: £65 per year

CIM assessments: £190 per assessment (total from £570)

CIM mandatory assignment support fee: £100 per assessment

So, if a student passes all three modules within 12 months and at the first attempt, they could pay as little as £1,175 in total.

Let’s compare that with the tuition fees for a Bachelor’s degree, which is an equivalent qualification. The annual tuition fees for an undergrad degree in the UK can be as high as £9,250, amounting to £27,750 over three years of study. That’s well over twenty times the cost of studying for the CIM Level 6 Digital Diploma with Target Internet.

To qualify for these rates, the organisation must enroll its employees with Target Internet for a period of no less than six months.
